PRESS RELEASE
December 14, 2015

Houston, TX - “I am honored to announce my candidacy for Harris County Tax Assessor Collector & Voter Registrar on the March 2016 Democratic Primary ballot.  I am dedicated to serving all citizens of Harris County with the integrity, transparency, and efficiency they deserve from this office.  My focus is to make the necessary changes to upgrade the office and bring it into the 21st century.  I intend to serve the people free of political cronyism and dysfunction.”

The Tax Assessor Collector & Voter Registrar’s Office registers eligible voters, maintains the voter rolls, deputizes volunteers to register voters, and maintains maps of voting precincts and districts in Harris County.

Bennett reminds voters, “Texans deserve to have a simple, secure online voter registration process available to them. There is a cost effective way to register every eligible Texan online who currently possesses a valid state issued driver license or identification card. Our Legislature could have made this a reality for Texas voters but for the efforts of the current Tax Assessor Collector & Voter Registrar in Harris County. I will end those questionable practices of voter suppression and disenfranchisement through improving and moving the current system into our modern era.”

The duties of the Tax Assessor Collector & Voter Registrar include issuing tax statements to taxpayers each year, delinquent tax accounts, collection of property taxes for contracting taxing jurisdictions, assisting property owners in applying for exemptions, such as homestead exemptions, disability exemptions, veterans and over-65 exemptions.  This office also registers motor vehicles, processes applications for certificate of title for automobile purchase/owners, issues special license plates, and processes applications for certificates of title for motorboats.

“It is unacceptable for citizens to face complicated processes, long lines, unjust standards, and inadequate equipment when conducting business with Harris County. My years of experience in public service will enable me to make the necessary changes in order for this government office to serve the people in a timely and efficient manner. Experience with the county in managing volume, solving administrative and logistical problems will serve in making these details of change possible. I know what needs to be done and I know how to do it” said Bennett.

Bennett further states, “I am asking for your vote and support in this upcoming primary election. I will take the politics, dysfunction and scandal out of this office and serve all the citizens of Harris County.”
